April 19, 1775 Around 10 a.m., British Lt. Col. Francis Smith sent 90 soldiers to secure a bridge defended by 400 patriots under Colonel James Barrett. The British fired a warning volley, but an unordered shot killed a colonial fifer, prompting the Minutemen to return deadly fire. Major John Buttrick’s command, “Fire, for God’s sake, fire!” unleashed musket balls, killing two British soldiers instantly, a third later, and wounding several. Outnumbered and shaken, the redcoats retreated in disarray.
