Social media platforms are businesses, they can censor everything and everyone by using every type of illegal system in every corner of them, which is harmful for free speech and financial freedom. Even worse, they can literally shut down and lay off their entire staff. On protocols, they require clients to use them, and are hosted on independent servers instead of massive datacenters, which makes them harder to censor.
