Back in 2005, Cat Power (a/k/a Chan Marshall) covered Blondie’s cover of the Nerves classic “Hanging On the Telephone” for a Cingular Wireless commercial. To date, Chan has never released her cover. It’s a hauntingly stirring rendition and even though it’s been 18 years, I can’t get the 60-second clip out of my head. Thanks to the internet, there is a recording of the commercial’s soundtrack without the promise of “raising the bar” layered on topmofntjose exquisite vocals. In the absence of Chan releasing a full-length version, I am tempted to start a petition for Florence + The Machine to release a cover it.
