University of Brunel in the UK starts project with Genuine H2 to turn seawater into hydrogen for use onboard commercial ships instead of marine diesel. Researchers also plan to use its electrolysis units to extract CO2 from water to create bicarbonates. One of its claimed competitive advantage is the ability to split H2 directly from seawater bypassing the desalination step.

this is significant because, generally, fuel cells are on the cusp of becoming mainstream within the next decade or so. in this case, the solid oxide fuel cell is made via 3D printing with a mathematically optimized geometry to maximize surface area (of the cathode/anode). SOFCs can run on a couple of fuel to produce electricity, from hydrogen to biogas.
