While listening to @jack and @Edward Snowden talk about #Nostr at #Nostrasia, I love that they riffed on the “feeling” of the internet. As a kid in the 90s, I grew up in a secluded mountain town of about 3,000 people that seemed forgotten in time. I was also very heavily into #Wu-tang, but I had next to no one to talk with who felt the same way I did about GZA’s Liquid Swords. The first time I logged on to the internet through GNN, I created a Wu-tang-inspired user name, and I immediately searched for a Wu-tang chat room…and found one. There I was, within a few minutes, pecking away at a keyboard to discuss and learn more about the Wu-tang Clan than I ever had before. A new-to-me, undiscovered digital world was literally at my fingertips—the feeling was and remains indescribable. With time, that feeling eventually faded, but now I’m beginning to believe that it was stolen from me through algorithmic filtering and surveillance capitalism through filter bubbles. Unbeknownst to me, the embers of those feelings lay smoldering, quietly awaiting the breath of oxygen to reignite them. Nostr is that oxygen 🔥 How fitting is it that I chose another Wu-inspired user name here even before I realized it? image

My First 3 Thoughts About Using Nostr. 1. The feed here feels clean, less like a firehose of nonsense, and more like an experience. Social media fatigue has been my biggest hurdle to trying something new. Between 𝕏, Facebook, and Instagram, keeping up has been exhausting as a solopreneur. But this? It’s like revisiting “Old ways, new days.” Honestly, it’s pretty damn cool to see a space that feels this refreshing. I’m getting the late1990s AOL WaReZ room feels. 2. Let’s face it…the way social media monetizes engagement is a dumpster fire, as it rewards spammy behavior, divisive posts, and clickbait nonsense. Here, the idea of people directly rewarding people feels…right. It aligns incentives in a way that makes sense; over time, I think this will be what sets Nostr apart. 3. The overall vibe here? Optimistic. It’s refreshing not to wade through the black-pilled doomers dominating 𝕏 these days. Over there, it feels like the loudest voices are just shouting their opinions into the void—and honestly, I’m over it. Here, the conversations feel constructive. People want to contribute something meaningful instead of just making noise. Massive thanks to @jack, @HODL, @Jeff Booth, and @ODELL for staying on the gas about it. I should have listened to you guys much, much earlier ✊🏽
