Effective January 2026, Google will end support for the Gmailify and POP (Post Office Protocol) features due to security concerns. The company will transition users to the more secure IMAP protocol for managing third-party email accounts. Why Gmail is ending support Security vulnerabilities in POP: The older POP3 protocol transmits data, including usernames and passwords, in plaintext, making it vulnerable to interception and attacks. It also lacks support for modern security measures like two-factor authentication. Encouraging modern standards: Google is pushing users toward IMAP, which offers better security, flexibility, and a more up-to-date method for synchronizing emails. Streamlining and unifying services: Retiring these older, less secure methods helps Google streamline its services around a consistent, modern protocol. Impact on users and required actions End of Gmailify features What is Gmailify? Introduced in 2016, Gmailify allowed users to apply Gmail's advanced features—like spam protection, inbox sorting, and faster search—to linked third-party email accounts from providers such as Yahoo and Outlook. What is changing? As of January 2026, those enhanced features will no longer work for third-party email accounts linked through Gmailify. The standard Gmail experience for these accounts will cease. End of POP email retrieval What was POP? The POP3 protocol allowed users to download emails from a third-party email account (e.g., from an internet service provider) directly into their Gmail inbox, effectively turning Gmail into a centralized inbox. What is changing? The option to "Check mail from other accounts" using POP will be removed from the desktop Gmail interface. The feature will stop functioning in January 2026. What users must do: Users who currently fetch emails using POP must reconfigure their accounts to use the IMAP protocol to avoid an interruption of service. Users can find instructions for enabling IMAP in their third-party email provider's documentation. What will not change Existing emails: Any emails already synchronized using POP will remain safely stored in your Gmail account and will not be deleted. Mobile app functionality: Users can still add and manage third-party email accounts in the Gmail mobile app (for Android and iOS), which uses the IMAP protocol. IMAP support: Google will continue to support the IMAP protocol, which is the modern standard for syncing emails across multiple devices.
