Stuff I am finding out while researching how one would build a properly censorship resistant social media network: - Nostr has serious scalability problems, is hardcoded to outdated crypto, and identity, UI and processing (relay) are all in different places meaning you have to basically trust everything: you have a binary trust choice (server or extension) with no non-custodial middle. Content is a raw string that has zero content typing, determining what to display is obsolete sniffing of file extensions and a serious security problem. - In order to post anything to ActivityPub you have to have a publicly registered certificate which identifies you, completely destroying anonymity. - Matrix has good content encryption but metadata is never end to end encrypted even when payloads are: your homeserver knows who's in which rooms with whom and when. Federation multiplies custodians. Identity is entirely homeserver-based, not portable - every Matrix identity is always an account on someone else's server rather than something owned by the individual. It's fucking grim. Systems that are supposedly "privacy oriented" are in fact nothing of the sort.
