Surging Prices Drive Beef Theft, Meat Smuggling, and Backyard Chickens
Rising meat prices in Canada are driving changes in consumer behaviour, from increased shoplifting and meat smuggling to backyard chicken farming and bargain hunting. Police and retailers across Canada are reporting increased meat thefts, while cargo theft investigators say organized gangs are increasingly targeting shipments of beef and other food products. Feed sales also suggest growing interest in backyard chickens as consumers search for cheaper ways to secure animal protein. Statistics Canada data shows meat prices have risen sharply over the past five years. The average price of beef striploin rose from $22.87 per kilogram in April 2021 to $42.42 in April 2026, while ground beef climbed from $9.19 to $15.59 over the same period.

Farmers, MPs Protest Alto High Speed Rail on Parliament Hill
OTTAWA—Hundreds of protesters travelled to Ottawa to demonstrate against the federal government’s proposed Toronto to Quebec City high-speed rail line, which they say would involve the expropriation of land from farmers and the dividing up of rural communities. Several citizen groups oppose the 1,000-kilometre high-speed rail corridor that would stretch from Toronto, to Ottawa, to Montreal, and to Quebec City. The Alto Crown corporation, which is behind the project, estimates that the railway could cost between $60 billion and $90 billion, while Ottawa has projected it would create 51,000 jobs over 10 years. The project is also opposed by the Conservatives, who say the cost is too high, while the Bloc Québécois opposes the current approach to the project.
