The priority for a true transition to democracy must be the stability of the country, economic recovery and opening up, and beginning to dismantle the repressive apparatus, opening up civic space and building a path towards free elections.

Venezuela's amnesty law is over. It freed 8,616 people — but Foro Penal confirms only 186 were actual political prisoners. Over 400 remain behind bars today. Tres meses después de la captura de Maduro, el mismo aparato que construyó esas celdas está administrando la transición. La amnistía no puede ser un instrumento de control político. Cada preso que sigue preso es evidencia de que la transición aún no es real. La oposición democrática debe estar en la mesa. Las elecciones libres deben tener fecha. El Estado de derecho no puede esperar. La libertad de Venezuela no está terminada. Apenas ha comenzado.

Prison strips you of almost everything. What it could not take: the image of my daughter Manuela — four years old — visiting me dressed as Elsa from Frozen. She wore that dress because she believed her father was a prisoner in a castle. That a princess could free him. She was right about the castle. And she was right about the ending. Freedom is not something you're given. It's something you hold — even in a cell, even in exile, even when the door is locked from the outside.
