Today, Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodríguez arrived in The Hague for ICJ hearings on the Esequibo. The symbolism is not lost on me. The same apparatus that jailed 8,000+ people for demanding democracy now sends its representative to argue international law. The amnesty law, passed under US pressure, freed only 186 true political prisoners. More than 1,000 remain detained. This is not a transition. It is normalization of the same power with a different face. Venezuela deserves real democracy — not a rebranded autocracy presenting itself at the Hague.

Every Sunday in Ramo Verde, I thought about my children. Manuela was four when I was imprisoned. She dressed as Elsa from Frozen for her birthday — because I couldn't be there. Nelson was baptized on Christmas Day inside the prison. That morning, I understood something I had not fully grasped before: freedom is not something you're given. It's something you hold — even in a cell, even in exile. That conviction is why I keep building. For Venezuela. For every family waiting on the other side of a locked door.

Today at Truth Tellers (Sir Harry Evans Investigative Journalism Summit), I spoke with Maria Ressa about the challenges of journalism under autocracies. In autocracies, the first casualty is truth. Maria won the Nobel Peace Prize for her courage and journalistic work in the Philippines, facing persecution, censorship, and disinformation. In Venezuela, we know this reality all too well. When the truth makes those in power uncomfortable, reporting it becomes an act of bravery. That is why today, more than ever, we must defend free journalism, the truth, and the right of societies to be informed.

The priority for a true transition to democracy must be the stability of the country, economic recovery and opening up, and beginning to dismantle the repressive apparatus, opening up civic space and building a path towards free elections.
