Why Synthetic Minerals Aren’t the Same Thing as Synthetic Vitamins It’s common to hear people worry about “synthetic” supplements, but minerals and vitamins are very different when it comes to how they’re made and how the body uses them. Minerals are elements from the periodic table — things like magnesium, boron, zinc, and copper. These are the same atoms whether they come from a rock, seawater, or a supplement. They’re not “built in a lab” the way synthetic vitamins are. Instead, minerals are mined from the earth or extracted, purified, and then combined with a carrier (like gluconate or glycinate) to help your body absorb them. Once the mineral is freed in your digestive system, it’s chemically identical to the mineral from food. Vitamins, on the other hand, are complex organic molecules that your body recognizes in only one specific shape. Synthetic vitamins are made by assembling them through multi-step chemical processes or by using fermentation tanks with special microorganisms. Because vitamins are shape-sensitive and often come with natural cofactors in food, a synthetic version can sometimes act differently than the food form unlike minerals which behave exactly the same whether they come from food or a supplement. In short: Synthetic minerals are refined natural elements — the same atoms your body needs and uses — just purified and paired with a compound that makes them easier to absorb.
