On June 18th the Lawful Access Act passed third reading after the government limited debate and forced the National Security Committee to sit past midnight, skipping dozens of outstanding amendments. One member said they were rammed through without debate. The bill lets the Minister of Public Safety secretly order any electronic service provider to retain your metadata and build the technical means to hand it over.
Signal and DuckDuckGo say they may leave Canada rather than comply. Apple and Meta have urged amendments. The government called the privacy concerns a tinfoil hat fantasy.
