I am the lead maintainer of the HestiaPi, an open source thermostat.

Now I'm unable to reproduce the issue. 😠 Same hardware, down to the exact SD card. Same software, bit for bit. Same process of turning it on, rebooting, hard powering down... These issues are The Worst. #tech #RaspberryPi #IoT #debugging #troubleshooting

While I am rebooting and reflashing and waiting, I am also printing cases and making tiny (1mm) tweaks to get it absolutely perfect! #perfectionist image

Oh, the plot thickens! My fast SD card booted fine the first time (and through the normal series of reboots), but then ran into this "external loading" problem again. So maybe it's something that is happening after the first complete boot? Or is something that happens when I yanked the power instead of shutting it down gracefully? Or some combination of factors?

Yesterday I was able to reproduce and resolve an issue someone was having with their home built #HestiaPi. It got stuck on the loading screen because their SD card was too slow. Using a fast, name brand SD card fixed it. Same Pi Zero, same imsge file being flashed, different results. Amazing. This also explains the random reports of slow touchscreens that I've seen over the past few months. Again, caused by a slow SD card. I'm going to update the owner's manual with this info soon.

For people who are just finding out about the #HestiaPi project because I hopped on #Nostr, please know that it's not just me, it's a whole community. I am the primary maintainer now, but I did not invent the project. Picture is a mostly assembled unit that runs on DC power. The pins for the LCD touchscreen are the only thing left to solder on. Technically, the screen could go directly on the pi headers if not for the relays on the right which would intersect with the screen. image

If I sold a #HestiaPi thermostat for #bitcoin, I'd totally shop at #newegg to get parts so I try to help make this bitcoin #CircularEconomy thing work. They are one of the few places where I can spend #BTC on things I actually want!

I am on a quest to find the perfect sized bolts for the #HestiaPi. I just ordered $45 worth of hardware from McMasterCarr. The diameter, thread pitch, and drive are the easy parts. The exact length and ideal head type are what I still need to dial in.

I am going to experiment with some pads on the case to lift the PCB up by a specific amount. Right now the length of the tails from the headers is what determines the PCB height. This means the height of the PCB varies, even if slightly, on each build. This, in turn, causes the ideal height of the case to vary, as the screen is attached to the shell of the case. Standardizing this offset, the pin header size (top), and the height of the case means a better fit for every #thermostat that I make. Adding these will also require changing the orientation in which the backplate is printed in order to continue avoiding the need for any supports. This is the amount of time, #passion and #engineering that I put into this project. ❤️ If you want to support my efforts in making #OpenSource #thermostats, check my profile on how to donate #bitcoin or buy a thermostat. The thermostats are basically sold at cost +$15/hr for my labor to assemble & test them, but importantly, it also allows me to do experiments that require ordering parts. I can't afford to just order parts to experiment, especially when it's like $10 a pop in shipping charges. That adds up real fast for people like me who don't have a high paying tech job. Thanks for listening. #IoT #HestiaPi #FOSS #FLOSS image

@Luke Dashjr If you still have a #HestiaPi and are still working on a faster, more efficient image for it, I'd be interested in learning more about where you are in the project and probably helping with coding.

Should I print this #bitcoin sign next? image There is also a base to hold it upright. Would any people here on #nostr be interested in this kind of thing? #3Dprinting #manufacturing

And the other half of the case is done. image I though having a 3D printer was going to be handy, but I gotta tell ya, it's a game changer.

I am so excited! I finally saved up enough money to buy a #3Dprinter. I just printed the backplate for a #HestiaPi case. image It's nothing especially special. I've had many of these printed many of these on friends' printers, at the #library, and at the #makerspace. The difference is that I printed this one by myself. And the print quality is great, despite it being a cheap printer. #SelfSufficiency #SelfReliance #Manufacturing #IoT #OpenSource #FOSS #FLOSS

You #nostr people seem to be into #bitcoin, does anyone know if there is something like #Tindie that allows me to accept bitcoin?

Woot! My documentation on how to troubleshoot and resolve issues with the touchscreen of the #HestiaPi got accepted upstream. All open source projects should have good documentation and I'm proud to be the change I want to see in the world. 😁
