Both the new clicky models worked fine in the case.
One of them only worked after I replaced the switch which had a longer-than-normal button. The button was close to the edge and the case was holding down the reset button. It took me a little while to figure out what was going on with that one. ๐คฃ

I am the lead maintainer of the HestiaPi, an open source thermostat.
Today I built a couple of the experimental "clicky" versions of the #HestiaPi Touch.

It took 4 hours to build and test them, but I still need to test the case fit to make sure everything is good mechanical fit there. I just ran out of time.
At this point I know the electronics are solid, so if anything needs adjusted to fit, I can modify the case to accommodate. Hopefully I'll report back in the next few days about the case testing.

My goal for 2024 is to get 12 people to switch to an open source thermostat!
It doesn't even have to be one I built, or even a #HestiaPi for that matter, it could be some #DIY solution.
That's an average of 1 per month. I think more people would be interested if they only knew about it.

I haven't said anything about this publically, and it's still something I'm just mulling over, not an actual plan, but...
I've been thinking about trying to put together a #crowdfunding campaign to buy parts for building a big batch of #HestiaPi thermostats.
The thing is, I'd need a lot of money to order parts in bulk so I can keep the costs reasonable per unit. Like probably at least $4000 USD to build 30 units.
I just don't know if there's enough interest in open source #hardware to make it a reality. And even if there is, I don't know that I can get the word out to them.
What do you all think?
Interesting enough to spend ~0.0036 BTC for an #openSource, wifi accessible, touchscreen #thermostat. It's similar to a #Google #nest except that it doesn't snitch on you!
I have a lot in common with the lead developer of the #ZeroPhone. Our commitment to #OpenSource #Hardware, long term support, desire for sustainability, supporting upstream projects, and tolerating imperfect openness in some components for now until more options are available later.
However, I very much disagree with this:
I hope it was an April fools day joke. It was written in 2019 and was the last newsletter ever written, so joke or not, it may have killed the project.
The reason I disagree with the "put it in the cloud" approach is that it violates the goal of self-sufficiency, and robustness in terms of if the project leader leaves the project (for any reason).
I also value local-first computation. Technology should work without the internet. Period. It can work better with the internet, and have extra features, but it should be a requirement for basic functionality.

I can't afford to buy any more parts right now, but today I assembled two units of parts I had in stock.

I enjoy making tiny tweaks over time, from mechanical alignments, to adding sockets, to trying different components for the electronics that fit a little better, are a little cheaper, or more readily available.
It's pretty good now. Adjustments and frustrations are less common.

USD for scale. You'll notice that bitcoin is **above** the dollar. ๐
I am trying to get a #bitcoin #lightning #wallet so I can do the #zaps thing.
- #Alby, invite only
- #Strike, not open source, no APK, and likely depends on google play services
- #lnbits, says it is experimental and should only be used for testing
- #Zeus, couldn't figure it out plus I don't have sats to open a channel
Any suggestions on where I should go next?
Constraints:
- Must be either
- open source (preferrably on F-Droid) or
- web based
- I don't have any sats to spend yet
Things I'll tolerate:
- Can be a custodial solution
- I do want it to be simple, but I'm also willing to learn more about lightning networks if necessary
- I don't need advanced features like using it to log into websites; I just want to receive/send sats
- I'm willing to pay reasonable fees
I might not be able to print an infinite number of #HestiaPi cases, but I have extra orange filament that I can use to print "Bitcoin Preferred" signs. 19 hours, but I bet it will be worth the wait.

I'm working on making the #HestiaPi case have stand offs for the PCB.
This will cause the PCB to be straight and a specific distance from backplate. Currently, the distance is dictated by the length of the tails on the header pins, which also makes the board sit at an angle.
This change will enable 4 identical screws to hold things in place (as opposed to being a combination of whatever fits).
If successful, it will make the parts list much better and allow me to stock fewer parts.

Does anyone know where I can get a lightning wallet provider that doesn't require a closed source app? I've given up on Strike.
Someone suggested strike.me as a #custodial #lightning #wallet provider because the self-custody tools are not reasonable for beginners.
Is this a closed source app?
Is the APK file available?
Can I just sign up on the website?
If the custodial wallets are this difficult, I can't imagine what self-custody must be like!!! #strike
Now I'm unable to reproduce the issue. ๐ Same hardware, down to the exact SD card. Same software, bit for bit. Same process of turning it on, rebooting, hard powering down...
