US-based TV coverage of the Olympics has been circling the drain for the past few decades. It's gone from tolerable to barely tolerable, to outright annoying, with a collage of personal-interest stories and gushing commentary that's so insanely cringe.
Maybe it's just a uniquely American thing to want to manufacture some patriotism through the lens of the individual's story. Instead of letting the competition play out and drama speak for itself, it's turned into a series of commentary, stats, rah-rah cheerleading, and over-the-top personal stories.
Like, can we just watch an minimally processed feed of a competition without cutting in with a personal sob story about someone's family or when they lost their first tooth?
Then they rolled out this feature today... 🤦♂️

Had one of those rare incredible and gratifying days today. If you go into something with no expectations, a good attitude, and give it your best shot, it's amazing what can come out of it.
Went to get my haircut today. I’ve been close with my hairdresser for at least 4-5 years, gotten to know her pretty well. Every six weeks, like clockwork.
She’s gone through some shit recently, re-evaluating life. Smart, open minded. Bright. Positive. Asked me about bitcoin a few months ago, out of the blue.
Have been back twice since then. Bought her a book. Told her the best thing she can do is read up on it and have an open mind. Maybe buy a little, so you can feel it. But read, educate yourself first above all.
Fast forward to today. Lots more questions. Volatility, energy, what is money anyway?, do you think it’ll drop sharply again? why do home prices only go up?, why are my hair product prices going through the roof? She’s on the path.
Shifted to time preference, energy, what it means for freedom and the 3rd world, those with no financial privilege. Talked about funding wars, petrodollar, hyperinflation in history, etc. Real smorgasbord of topics to dip your toe near the rabbit hole. Kept it light though.
In the end, the most interesting comment came early. Sentiment check. She said of all her clients, bitcoin gets mentioned periodically… nobody takes it seriously. “If it’s so great, why haven’t you accepted it as payment then?…Must be nothing.” It’s all a scam, drug dealers, criminals, etc. etc. Apparently, it turns out, I’m the only one who has even engaged in a rational discussion about it. Early.
For perspective, she probably has several hundred clients, from all walks of life, broad cross section of society. Many are very successful and well educated people. Even someone who works for the monetary authorities. Trust.
We’re in the middle of one of America’s major cities. And not a single one of her clients has said a single positive or serious thing to say about bitcoin. It’s laughed off in passing. I told her, either I’m crazy, or this is the best proof you’re gonna get that this once in a lifetime technological shift is not priced in or understood yet. But it could very well be the most important technologies of our lifetimes, hiding in plain open source sight. There is so much room to run to change the world.
All it takes is an open mind, perhaps some circumstance, curiosity and being humble.
What a time to be alive.
Relax, nothing is under control. 🧡
