🇨🇳 CHINA MAY TREAT CRYPTO MIXERS AS MONEY LAUNDERING RED FLAGS Senior Chinese legal scholars and prosecutors are calling for a sweeping overhaul of how the country investigates and prosecutes cryptocurrency-related money laundering, arguing that Bitcoin, stablecoins, mixers, privacy coins, and decentralized exchanges have outpaced existing laws. The proposal highlights three major weaknesses in China’s current framework: difficulty charging offenders under existing statutes, challenges collecting and authenticating blockchain evidence, and obstacles recovering crypto assets moved across borders. Among the recommendations are expanding money laundering investigations, requiring blockchain forensic analysis in criminal cases, recognizing on-chain data as admissible evidence, allowing courts to infer criminal intent from the use of mixers, privacy coins, and anonymous wallets, and giving investigators broader authority to conduct blockchain surveillance and technical investigations. The paper also calls for a national platform to seize, custody, value, and liquidate confiscated crypto assets, along with stronger international cooperation to trace, freeze, and recover digital assets transferred overseas. image

BITCOIN POLICY INSTITUTE MOVES TO INTERVENE IN ‘ABANDONED BITCOIN’ LAWSUIT The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) has filed a motion to intervene in the New York “Abandoned Bitcoin” case, where an anonymous plaintiff, “Noah Doe,” is seeking a court declaration granting legal ownership of allegedly abandoned Bitcoin, including coins widely believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto. If granted, BPI would become an intervenor-defendant, allowing it to participate directly in the case. Court filings argue the nonprofit has a strong public interest in the outcome given its work on Bitcoin policy and civil liberties. image

SENATOR URGES SENATE TO KEEP NON-CUSTODIAL BITCOIN DEVELOPER PROTECTIONS IN CLARITY ACT Sen. Ron Wyden urged Senate leaders to preserve the BRCA provision in the CLARITY Act, warning that removing protections for non-custodial, open-source developers would undermine legal certainty for Bitcoin and crypto software while doing little to combat illicit finance. Wyden argued developers who never control user funds should not be treated as money transmitters. image
