Something I have been thinking on for a while: an uncensorable name system (or more generally a global key-value store) anchored on the Bitcoin blockchain. Not a new idea, but a few recent developments have given me some ideas. Envelopes (inscription innovation) have a lot of potential, also bootstrapping a new protocol for name propagation is difficult, but there is a certain new protocol with a lot of freedom that is bootstrapping a network effect as we speak, called nostr… It wouldn’t require a lot of on chain data, just a name, signature and merkle root on chain. Record records could be propagated on nostr. Each “name” published on chain would actually be a name space containing potentially infinite names. Anyone could operate a namespace, especially businesses. Every namespace is anchored by a merkle root on chain. When new names or modifications are made to the namespace, a new update is published on chain, containing a new merkle root which includes a link to the previous merkle tree, creating an unbreakable chain. If you have a name in a namespace, what prevents the namespace owner from rugging you? First, your name in the namespace must be signed by your private key. The signature is included in the merkle tree, so the namespace owner can never revoke or change your key without your permission. What if they attempt to prevent you from updating your name in the next update? You can publish a permanent redirect, directly on chain, to a new name in a different namespace.
