The adornments atop chess figures mimic the movement of the pieces.
The diagonal slot indicates the movement of the bishop on the diagonal squares of the board. The four slots on a rook indicated the piece moves on the ranks & files. The ears & nose of the Knight or horse indicate it moves 2 and 1. The 8 indentations on the queens crown indicates she can move inn eight directions, and the same applies to the cross atop the king.
