"This too should be observed, that such things as are a consequence of a well-constituted nature have also something of the graceful and attractive. For instance, when bread is baked, some parts are split at the surface, and these parts which thus open, and have a certain fashion contrary to the purpose of the baker's art, are beautiful in a manner, and in a peculiar way excite a desire for eating. So, too, figs, when they are the ripest, gape open; and in the ripe olives the very cracks add a peculiar beauty to the fruit. And the drooping of the ears of corn, and the wrinkling of the brow of the lion, and the foam which flows from the mouth of the wild boar, are not beautiful, if we look at them in isolation, but because they are a consequence of things that are natural, they add a new beauty and a peculiar attraction, and they excite our mind to a certain wonder, because we see in them a natural process that we would not have perceived otherwise." "We may as well accept that we are enemies of the status quo and that our lives from this day on will involve risk. Anyone who is serious enough about goodness becomes an enemy of hierarchical systems... and of this system in particular. As we so often say, "Either we spread life or we spread entropy." That choice always re-mains because it is built into the structure of the universe. So long as humans remain human, this is the essential choice that we face." Peter Sabra, at The Breaking Dawn by Paul Rosenberg

Epictetus on the defense of the Citadel. --- XLV. If you wish your house to be well managed, imitate the Spartan Lycurgus. For as he did not fence his city with walls, but fortified the inhabitants by virtue and preserved the city always free; so do you not cast around (your house) a large court and raise high towers, but strengthen the dwellers by good-will and fidelity and friend-ship, and then nothing harmful will enter it, not even if the whole band of wickedness shall array itself against it. --- #Meshtadel
