Just “won” a silent auction for a Magic Johnson autograph jersey. It’ll be the second signed Magic jersey in my possession. A few years ago, my brother gave me an autographed Magic Johnson Team USA jersey. Most people don’t remember the origin of why players have to exit a game when there’s an open wound. This started after Magic Johnson stated he had HIV. I was a kid. He was my hero. Taught me how to play basketball by watching his VHS tape. I cried. Players were in uproar. They didn’t want to play against him. He was forced to retire. But after a few months, the fans voted Magic Johnson into the All-Star game. They let him play, he had 25pts, 9 boards and 5 assists…and a memorable 3 pointer to seal the game. He walked away as MVP. The league instituted the blood rule the following season. Sports transcended culture during this time. Opened up the conversation about HIV and AIDS amongst those who were aware.
