Fassbinder takes Douglas Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows ( which we’ll hopefully show soon!) and truly makes it his own, though even stylistically he evokes Sirk here with his use of long tracking shots and controlled mise-en-scene — the use of colour is just superb. This is one of Fassbinder’s finest films, and if you are not familiar with his work, after this you will want to watch it all! “The stillness of the film is deeply sad. But in the middle of all this sadness lies the possibility Emmi and Ali create when they find each other. The film draws its immense force from its concentration on two simple facts: the world's indifference and the couple's love.” — Criterion Collection.
