How Does Mickey Miles Make his Psychedelic Pop Cartoons? | Midnight Music Review in the Attic
WASTOIDS pal Matt “Favorite Vegetable” Durkin drops in to share a mix of his favorite tunes as of late. Just like his varied creations suggest, his mix is eclectic and far ranging, grouping together early electronic music from Raymond Scott, Japanese music-making twins, Satoshi & Makoto, XTC, the Louvin Brothers, and the recently departed avant-icon Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Every emo band you ever loved are heading out on tour. The All-American Rejects launch the Wet Hot All-American Summer Tour, power pop classic Guitar Romantic by The Exploding Hearts reissued, new music from ambient country duo North Americans, garage power pop duo Crocodiles share “Upside Down in Heaven” video, and John Vanderslice hooks up with WASTOIDS to answer YOUR questions.
Today on The Spindle, Marc and John dig into a purist 7-inch band: Minnesota’s Halo of Flies, whose discography is practically all singles. Guitarist Tom Hazelmyer launched the Amphetamine Reptile label to put out music by the trio; it eventually became a home for noise rock stalwarts Helmet, Cows, and Unsane, but Halo of Flies stood out in the grunge era as a band unafraid to put catchy melodies inside swirling feedback. Dig it!

You can recognize Mickey Miles‘ singular, hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animation style the moment you see it. His soulful lines, vibrant but warm colors, and a playful ’70s-inspired aesthetic have made him a go-to for artists like Alex Izenburg, Robbing Millions, the essential New Commute blog, and even avant-garde icon John Cale, who tapped Miles for his Davie Bowie-inspired video for “Night Crawling.” Listen:
Welcome to the 10th episode of WASTOIDS Music News. This week, Bandcamp forms a union, Ween’s going on tour, there’s a new Devo doc, Bully album, and Sly Stone book on the way—and maybe an alien mothership too.
You’ve probably heard Devo’s “Whip It”—but have you heard all the stories behind it? On this all-new episode of The Spindle podcast, Marc and John welcome guest Evie Nagy, author of the 33.3 book Devo’s Freedom Of Choice, to dive into the tales of this deep and weird single, which somehow made the top 20 despite people (wrongly) assuming that it was about masturbation. Find out what “Whip It” really means, this week on the Spindle! image
