The bank has refused to comment on the matter. The dollar products, which led to financial ruin for hundreds of Swiss private customers of UBS, have now had even more severe consequences. Two affected individuals have committed suicide, according to multiple sources. When contacted, a UBS spokesperson said: "We will not comment on this." The victims had lost large amounts of money due to products offered by the Swiss bank, which suffered significant losses last year due to the dollar's decline. The products, called "Range Target Payout Forward" (RTPF), were structured in such a way that UBS would only have to pay a small amount in the worst-case scenario. On the other hand, customers not only risked losing their entire investment but also faced the danger of having to surrender additional assets to UBS. This was the case when they used "leverage," or borrowed money from the bank to increase their investment. Many customers did this on the advice of their UBS financial advisors, according to several clients. Several criminal complaints have been filed with the Zurich Economic Crimes Prosecutor's Office on behalf of affected customers. The complainants and their lawyers argue that the asymmetric profit structure of the products was unfair. For a potential return of 5% at most, customers had risked almost their entire existence. The products only paid out cash every two weeks if the dollar remained within a certain range. If this happened several times, UBS would terminate the product with a one-year term prematurely. On the other hand, customers suffered losses as soon as the derivative moved above or below certain thresholds. These losses increased exponentially as the distance to the agreed thresholds increased. "The UBS did not explain the risks to me," says one customer. Instead, their private bankers had actively encouraged them to invest more in these dollar derivatives. "My advisor called me constantly and recommended more of these products," the customer said. UBS is trying to shift the blame for the losses to a former regional manager who was responsible for Eastern Switzerland. The manager, who was promoted to Head of Investment Advisory for UBS Wealth Management Switzerland after just two years, is the only one who has so far been held accountable for the debacle. His superiors, including the head of Swiss Private Banking, August Hatecke, a close associate of division head Iqbal Khan, remain in their positions.
