This trope of paying for opulent forgiveness gifts always seemed deeply unhealthy to me.

Was traveling in a tropical country recently and the first day I arrived my friend and local “fixer” took me to a locals market and urged me to explore the stalls and buy at least one of all the local exotic produce and fruits so I would have time to buy some more once I realized what I liked. Best advice ever and it was also wonderful to see how (rightfully) proud he was of all the amazing things that are grown in his native land. Something like $10 USD and I’ve been eating some wild Dr Seuss plants 😅
