Roughly a year ago, we had a contract to work on a Fortnite project. While wrapping up the contracted work, we decided to create a Fortnite game themed around the #Bitaxe for fun. In this game, two teams battle on exact replicas of the open-source Bitcoin miner, the Bitaxe. Each team must protect their base “Bitaxe” and attempt to reset the opposing team’s Bitaxe by pressing the actual reset button on the device. Gather your squad and enjoy a strategy battle royale developed for the open-source #Bitcoin community. image image

Many of you are familiar with Jason P. Lowery’s "Softwar," but fewer are aware of the impending #Bitcoin mining "Hardwar." Recently, Bitdeer Technologies Group released a significant update about their latest ASIC chip, and it's impressive! In the competitive world of Bitcoin mining ASIC chip manufacturers, we have major players like Bitmain, Whatsminer, Canaan, ePIC Blockchain Technologies, Intel, and Innosilicon, all specializing in ASIC chips tailored specifically for Bitcoin mining. Two companies stand out for entirely different reasons: Bitdeer, for the impressive performance and efficiency of their chip specifications, and Block Inc.'s Proto team, for their pioneering steps into the Bitcoin mining arena with open-source and transparency goals. While Bitdeer embraces a proprietary model, Block has announced its intention to champion open-source transparency. Yet, whispers of "partially open source" and "open source when convenient" have already emerged from within the Bitcoin mining community. Are they truly the open-source heroes that the Bitcoin community so desperately needs? Only time will tell. Bitdeer Technologies Group recently achieved a significant milestone with the successful prototype testing of its SEAL02 Bitcoin mining chip, developed in collaboration with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). This chip demonstrated an exceptional power efficiency ratio of 13.5 joules per terahash (J/T) in low-voltage, ultra power-saving mode, setting a new benchmark for energy efficiency in Bitcoin mining. Bitdeer's achievement aligns with their commitment to sustainable and cost-effective mining solutions. They plan to integrate the SEAL02 chip into their upcoming SEALMINER A2 machines, with mass production scheduled for November 2024. Bitdeer has not claimed to pursue an open-source strategy and remains focused on delivering proprietary efficiency and performance. 🙄 In stark contrast, Jack Dorsey’s Block Inc., formerly known as Square, has taken a more vocal stance on open-source principles in Bitcoin mining. Their Proto team has completed the design of an advanced 3-nanometer Bitcoin mining chip and is developing a modular mining system in partnership with Core Scientific. They emphasize decentralization, transparency, and a genuine commitment to open-source solutions for the mining community. This includes initiatives like the Mining Development Kit (MDK), designed to make mining hardware and software accessible to a broader audience, including smaller, independent manufacturers. While Block Inc. and others attempt to champion open-source ideals, the Bitcoin community is left wondering: Is this a genuine commitment, or merely "open source virtue signaling"? The rise of the open-source Bitcoin pleb mining community has set higher expectations for true transparency and open-source standards. Projects like the #Bitaxe have set a new precedent for free, open-source, and permissionless Bitcoin mining hardware. Can massive companies like Block actually live up to such open-source and transparent expectations? Until we see tangible open-source contributions from entities on GitHub and within the community, claims of transparency and open-source remain just that, words. The Bitcoin community values "proof of work, not proof of intentions," and only those who make concrete contributions will earn its respect. This evolving dynamic between Bitdeer's proprietary approach and Block Inc.'s open-source aspirations will determine the true innovator and leader in Bitcoin mining "Hardwar." As the industry watches closely, only time will reveal whether these companies will live up to their potential and ideals, or if their open-source commitments remain elusive promises. In the world of Bitcoin, actions speak louder than words, and only genuine proof of work will earn the status of a Bitcoin legend. image

Are you ready to hash at the cutting edge of the Open-Source Bitcoin Mining Efficiency Wars and usher in the Bitcoin mining Formula 1 era? The future of #BITCOIN mining will demand more hands-on innovation than ever before, granting unprecedented control over hardware, costs, and efficiency. Mega Bitcoin operations are already preparing to establish their own research and development divisions, staffed with open-source Bitcoin developers focused on waging the next great battle: The Bitcoin mining efficiency wars. Many are beginning to realize they haven’t fully accounted for the halving’s impact, with some operations just one price dip away from bankruptcy. While many will survive through creative strategies, efficiency and open-source thinking will be the key factors determining which operations thrive in the years ahead. With this new level of control comes game-changing efficiency that only open-source Bitcoin hardware development can offer. The pace of open-source innovation in Bitcoin mining hardware is lightning-fast, and few are truly prepared for what’s coming. Open-source Bitcoin hardware development doesn’t sleep, take weekends off, or observe regular holidays, it’s a global movement fueled by some of the brightest minds on the planet. This revolution is driven by passionate individuals reshaping a billion-dollar industry in their twilight hours. Hashrate wranglers, open-source cowboys, hashboard hackers, the motto is simple: "Open-source everything." The next phase will bring the creation of the first-ever open-source Bitcoin mining hardware, powered by a new generation of incredibly efficient ASIC chips, like those from blocks inc. With a capable PNP machine, anyone could manufacture the most efficient mining hardware available. Picture an unknown mining operation deep in a remote jungle, led by an innovative and creative engineer with access to a PNP “pick and place” machine and modest manufacturing equipment. They could be building and running the most efficient Bitcoin mining operation on the planet, and nobody would know. Why? Because of open-source Bitcoin hardware! Bitcoin mining has become predictable, with most operators running variations of the same 3-4 popular rigs. Competitive advantage has mainly been tied to cheap electricity or efficient cooling, solar, and geothermal energy sources. However, the next five years will be the heart of the efficiency wars. Soon, you won’t know who’s running what anymore. Just because a company employs open-source Bitcoin hardware developers doesn’t mean they’ll share their innovations and stay true to open-source principles, they might guard their competitive edge closely. The key to success will be ensuring your operation is staffed with the brightest open-source minds. Engineers capable of manufacturing your mining hardware, not just managing it. As highly efficient ASIC chips from companies like Block Inc. and others hit the market, any company with modest manufacturing equipment, like a PNP machine, could produce cutting-edge Bitcoin mining hardware on-site, keeping pace with the rapid advances in next-generation ASIC chips. Imagine a future where hardware upgrade costs are cut in half because you're simply replacing hashboards. The idea of an S21 chassis being the last one a mining operation will ever need! Eliminating the need for redesigns of infrastructure like mining containers and cooling systems to accommodate new hardware form factors. Upgrading would be incredibly simple, just swap out hashboards or, occasionally, control boards. Right now, everyone is working within the same limitations, relying on just a few new mining hardware models. It’s like stock car racing, where all the vehicles have identical specs. But Bitcoin mining is about to enter its Formula 1 era, where those who innovate and build custom hardware will gain a significant efficiency advantage. The only question is: Are you ready to hack the future of your mining operation’s efficiency? image image

Not sure who needs to hear this, To all #bitcoin and Open-Source innovators: whether you’re building hardware or software, here’s a hard truth, you’re on your own. No Bitcoin billionaire is coming to fund your work, and grants are like solo mining Bitcoin on a Bitaxe. Every project you start will likely require you to do everything yourself. Don’t rely on others, until your idea is fully realized, no one will truly care. Even when it’s built, most people will give it a brief glance before moving on. Build for yourself, create something you’re passionate about. Get lost in the excitement of your ideas, because that excitement might be your only reward. Be ready to drain your savings account to zero. This is the reality of Bitcoin and open-source development. But if you’re the developer I think you are, nothing—least of all this message—will stop your work.
