Warren Buffett addressed the value of gold this week. Why is it going up? Why is it beating all other investments? His answer? People are irrational.
But Buffett is 95 years old and doesn't have to worry about the end of the monetary system. Berkshire Hathaway owns enough assets that his cash stack doesn't really mean anything. Meanwhile, everyday people are worried about how to prevent their savings from melting away. To say that gold does nothing is arrogant and absurd. In the same way a levee just sits there but keeps the flood at bay, a scarce commodity provides some defense against inflation. Many of these big intitutional investors like Buffett lack a basic sense of decency.
I get he is talking to investors, but the message is clear: if you are trying to defend your work against debasement you're irrational.
