11 years ago, I enthusiastically posted this on Facebook: > Twister, p2p microblogging built on top of Bitcoin and BitTorrent protocols. A new breed of web apps is coming! Twister was a project by Brazilian computer scientist Miguel Freitas. Its website is still online here: http://twister.net.co/ There you can find this high-level description: > Twister is comprised of three mostly independent overlay networks. The first provides distributed user registration and authentication and is based on the Bitcoin protocol. The second one is a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) overlay network providing key/value storage for user resources and tracker location for the third network. The last network is a collection of possibly disjoint β€œswarms” of followers, based on the Bittorrent protocol, which can be used for efficient near-instant notification delivery to many users. > Unfortunately, it did not get any significant adoption and eventually faded away. @fiatjaf was 22 when Twister launched, and I wonder whether this earlier attempt to build a truly decentralized social media might have served as an inspiration for the design of Nostr. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, neither Miguel Freitas or fellow developer Lucas Leal are here on Nostr. Too bad. image

Bitcoin is for everyone, including governments, no matter what we think. Asking someone to keep their hands off Bitcoin is not very ... Bitcoin. πŸ˜‰ Educating ourselves and our kids to prioritize self-custody and decentralized tools is a good-enough guarantee. image

Exactly 11 years ago, we made the decision to move the servers hosting the open-source password manager Clipperz out of the US. We relocated them to Iceland and switched the domain from .com to .is. At the same time, we went bankless and decided to only accept Bitcoin donations. In 2013. The reason? We faced a barrage of attempted bank transfers originating from compromised bank accounts. Each transfer was worth 10K+ euros. Of course, this resulted in numerous fraud accusations, lengthy and stressful interactions with law enforcement, and a significant risk of indictment and prosecution. As of today, investigations led nowhere and both the culprit and the motive for the attack remain unknown. You can read the whole story here: and some reactions https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1tvkm8/legit_opensource_password_manager_clipperz_has/ image

Blackrock made a Bitcoin video explainer. Cool, isn't it? But ... Voice: "Bitcoin has a fixed supply of 21M" On-screen text: "There is no guarantee that bitcoin's 21 million supply cap will not be changed" Why should they add that?! image

Quick question: is anyone getting paid in Bitcoin by their employer? How do you manage fiat payments, especially large ones? - selling on exchanges - getting loans using bitcoin as collateral - using a debit card linked to your btc stack, - ... (mostly interested in options available to EU residents, thanks!) image
