On this day in 2015, Gavin Andresen proposed BIP 101 — a plan to increase Bitcoin's block size from 1MB to 8MB, doubling every two years up to 8GB. It was the opening salvo of what became known as the 'block size wars' — a multi-year civil war within the Bitcoin community over how to scale the network. BIP 101 was never activated, but the debate it ignited shaped Bitcoin's future more than almost any other event.
