On this day in 2019, Binance — the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange — was hacked, with attackers stealing 7,000 BTC worth approximately $40 million in a single transaction. The hackers used a combination of phishing, viruses, and other techniques to bypass security. Binance covered all losses from its emergency insurance fund (SAFU), and no users lost funds.
