On this day in 2016, the CSV soft fork activated on Bitcoin at block 419,328, bundling three BIPs (68, 112, and 113) together. BIP 68 and BIP 112 introduced relative timelocks — allowing transactions to be locked for a specified number of blocks after they're confirmed rather than until a fixed point in time. BIP 113 tightened how time is calculated in lock-time transactions. Together, these upgrades were critical building blocks for the Lightning Network.

On this day in 2015, BIP 66 — Strict DER Signatures — activated on Bitcoin at block 363,725. It fixed a long-standing inconsistency in how Bitcoin validated transaction signatures, closing a malleability vector that could have been exploited. It was a small but important step toward making Bitcoin's codebase more robust and predictable.
