On this day in 2017, Segregated Witness (BIP 141) activated on Bitcoin at block 481,824 — the most significant protocol upgrade in Bitcoin's history up to that point.
Proposed by Pieter Wuille, SegWit fixed transaction malleability, effectively increased block capacity, and laid the groundwork for the Lightning Network.
It took years of bitter debate known as the 'block size wars' and a grassroots UASF movement to finally push it through — but it changed Bitcoin forever.
On this day in 2011, Amir Taaki published BIP 1 — the very first Bitcoin Improvement Proposal — establishing the formal process by which anyone could propose changes to the Bitcoin protocol.
Modeled after Python's PEP process, the BIP system gave Bitcoin a structured way to evolve through community consensus rather than top-down decisions.
Every major upgrade since — from P2SH to SegWit to Taproot — has gone through this process.
