Swiss Pleb on a mission to travel the world while buidling open source stuff.

Notes (11)

I decided to switch to NixOs 2 days ago. Apart from having a filesystem corruption that I am fixing right now, I've quite enjoyed it so far. Who else is running NixOs here? image

Every single time I come back to Switzerland and go through the Main station I just get an insanely depressed vibe by looking at people. No friendliness, no happyness, nothing. I thought the nostalgia could hit after 8 months away, but this time seems even worse. The west is turning into depressialand....

50 years later and it only got worse... The Development Set by Ross Coggins "Adult Education and Development" September 1976 Excuse me, friends, I must catch my jet I'm off to join the Development Set; My bags are packed, and I've had all my shots I have traveller's checks and pills for the trots! The Development Set is bright and noble Our thoughts are deep and our vision global; Although we move with the better classes Our thoughts are always with the masses. In Sheraton Hotels in scattered nations We damn multi-national corporations; injustice seems easy to protest In such seething hotbeds of social rest. We discuss malnutrition over steaks And plan hunger talks during coffee breaks. Whether Asian floods or African drought, We face each issue with open mouth. We bring in consultants whose circumlocution Raises difficulties for every solution -- Thus guaranteeing continued good eating By showing the need for another meeting. The language of the Development Set Stretches the English alphabet; We use swell words like "epigenetic" "Micro", "macro", and "logarithmetic" It pleasures us to be esoteric -- It's so intellectually atmospheric! And although establishments may be unmoved, Our vocabularies are much improved. When the talk gets deep and you're feeling numb, You can keep your shame to a minimum: To show that you, too, are intelligent Smugly ask, "Is it really development?" Or say, "That's fine in practice, but don't you see: It doesn't work out in theory!" A few may find this incomprehensible, But most will admire you as deep and sensible. Development set homes are extremely chic, Full of carvings, curios, and draped with batik. Eye-level photographs subtly assure That your host is at home with the great and the poor. Enough of these verses - on with the mission! Our task is as broad as the human condition! Just pray god the biblical promise is true: The poor ye shall always have with you. This is Fanuel from Malawi. He grew up in a village around Mulanje Massif - the tallest Mountain in Malawi. He took me up to the peak for a challenging 3-day hike and even invited me to stay at his place on the day we got back down. We connected quite well and talked a lot about the issues that Malawi has and how their currency (Kwecha) is heading towards Hyperinflation right now. Next to being a guide he runs a small charity where he houses Kids, sends them to School and teaches them Carpentry. We installed his first Lightning wallet together - Unfortunately he still needs some USD in his life and AFAIK it's not easy to do P2P trading here in Malawi so I did pay him in Fiat, but I was able to give him a tip in Bitcoin and he gratefully accepts Donations for helping his community. Send some love to him if you feel like it. 265999329808@8333.mobi - https://8333.mobi/265999329808/static There's a lot more he's fighting for that I find amazing. Malawi but especially Mulanje has a big deforestation-issue. The locals kill entire forests to collect firewood, without sustainably replanting the trees. Instead of trying to do something against it the Government is actively encouraging this and dosencouraging people from cooking with Gas as the Presidents son wants to turn the natural beauty of Mulanje into a toxic Mining operation - the only Mining operation in the region that I support is Gridless. There's a lot more I could add here but this will be it for today. I can recommend you Ian Fosters Substack if you're interested about the destructive effects of Fiat in Malawi (https://open.substack.com/pub/ianfost) image image
