Not "fake" labeling; but rather the "faith based food systems" concept. They represent rules regarding cleanliness, what is prohibited, purity, and what foods may be eaten without guilt.
Kosher prohibits the consumption of Pork, separates Dairy and Meat products and requires the proper slaughtering of animals.
Halal represents similar restrictions, yet the documentation differs.
Organic prohibits the use of synthetic fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, genetic modification (though allows mutagenesis), and several agricultural practices that appear appealing in an advertisement but primarily consist of "old ways."
Non-GMO represents... nothing relative to health. Only indicates "that product was manufactured using a particular process." That's it. That is the entire philosophy.
Not related to Nutrients, but to Ritual.
You could take an Organic Palm Oil Deep Fryer and deep fry a Twinkie in it. Then, you could cover it in Organic Sugar, and then... you have Organic Food. Still a Fried Sponge Cake. Still Empty Calories. Still something you consume at a Gas Station and feel guilty about consuming.
Yet, some people will stare at a Bag of Organic Doritos, as if they are viewing a Yoga Mat.
Identical Corn. Identical Oil. Same Orange Dust that Stains Your Fingers Like You Committed a Crime.
Yet Now, it is Blessed:
"Blessed by the Non-GMO Project Verification."
As if the Problem with Doritos Was Ever the DNA.
This is when it begins to resemble Religion.
Because the Claim Is Not "This Is Healthier,"
but "This Was Made the Right Way."
Right way = the way that appears natural.
What is typically considered natural is the way that Grandparents Imagine Farms Operated, although their Farms Were Drowning in Arsenic Pesticides and Leaded Fuel.
Organic farming uses Pesticides, many of them.
Older ones.
Copper Sulfate. Rotenone. Spinosad.
Products that Must Be Sprayed More Frequently Because They Are Less Effective.
However, since they sound Herbal, they Get a Pass.
Science ≠ Incense.
And the Environment aspect? The Same Thing.
People Believe Organic = Planet Friendly By Default.
However, if You Need More Land, More Water, and More Spraying to Achieve the Same Yield, the Planet Does Not Automatically Clap For You.
Non-GMO Corn Requires Nitrogen.
Organic Corn Destroys Soil.
Organic Strawberries are Shipped 2000 Miles in Plastic.
The Label Did Not Make the Truck Electric.
Therefore, the Comparison of Kosher/Halal Fits.
Those Systems Do Not Pretend Pork Has Lower Nutritional Value Than Beef.
They Say Pork is Wrong.
Wrong Morally. Wrong Spiritually. Wrong Identity-Wise.
Organic and Non-GMO Do the Same Thing With Monsanto As the Devil Stand-In.
It is Not "This Molecule is Toxic."
It is "This Method is Tainted."
Therefore, we have this unusual Situation Where:
Golden Rice = Bad
Organic Cane Sugar = Fine
One Prevents Blindness.
The Other Rots Teeth.
However, One Came From a Lab, So Boo.
No One is Checking Protein Content.
No One is Checking Vitamin Levels.
They are Checking Lineage.
Who Bred It.
How it was Conceived.
Is it a Test Tube Baby or a Farm Kid.
That is Religion.
Just Without the Hats.
And the Funniest Part is How Selective it is.
Non-GMO Salt.
Salt Does Not Have Genes.
However, Slap that Label on There Anyway.
People Enjoy Seeing the Label.
Non-GMO Water.
Blessed by the Absence of DNA.
It is a Comfort Thing.
Similar to Lighting a Candle.
Similar to Avoiding Shellfish.
Similar to Saying Grace Before Dinner But for Whole Foods.
And I do not Hate it.
If Someone Wants to Eat Organic Because it Matches Their Worldview, Fine.
I Will Not Yell at Someone for Not Eating Bacon Either.
But Let us Not Pretend This is a Medical Chart.
Organic Doritos are Not a Multivitamin.
Non-GMO Cookies are Still Cookies.
A GMO Tomato Does Not Sneak Into Your Cells and Begin Editing Your Soul.
This is Food Identity, Not Food Chemistry.
Which is Fine.
Just State That.
State:
"I Eat This Because it Aligns with My Beliefs Regarding Nature and Industry."
Do Not State:
"I Eat This Because Science."
Because Science is Sitting Over There Like...
