I visited the History Museum of the Indonesian People’s Struggle in my city. It’s quite mind-boggling to imagine how the Indonesian people fought back then with only makeshift weapons against the British and Gurkha troops, who were the victors of World War II. They successfully repelled the British convoy over a 12-kilometer stretch as it was advancing toward Bandung from the direction of Bogor, thwarting their advance. This fierce resistance is documented in the British military history book, The Fighting Cock: The Story of the 23rd Indian Division by Colonel A.J.F. Doulton. The book acknowledges just how deadly the guerrilla tactics of the Indonesian independence fighters were.
