Nick has been forcing her to have sex with the customers. After one customer introduces her to Nietzsche (specifically, Will to Power), Lily decides to use sex to get what *she* wants. She moves to New York City and immediately sleeps with a clerk in a bank’s personnel office to get a job. Then she proceeds to sleep with a chain of bosses to gain promotions, discarding each man when she’s through with him. (At one point, she even deliberately sabotages an engagement.) Lily’s plan works well . . . until one man refuses to be dumped, at which point the story takes a turn.
