Daily Roman History: Though he was never the intended heir since his relations to the Imperial family was that of Augustus' step-son, Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus was forced to come out of retirement and named heir after the untimely deaths of Augustus' two grandsons in 4AD. His reign would prove to be a rocky one, always at odds with the Senate, and allegedly having his popular nephew Germanicus poisoned when he was viewed as a threat to usurp him. With the sudden death of his son and heir Drusus in 23AD Tiberius became aloof and withdrawn leaving most of the administration of the Empire to his Pretorian Prefect Sejanus. So reliant on Sejanus that Tiberius would begin calling him "Partner of my labours". This too eventually turned sour as Sajanus' corrupt leadership lead to him being murdered on Tiberius' orders in 31AD. For the last few years of his reign the Empire functioned essentially without a head, as Tiberius became even more paranoid and reclusive. He died in 37AD, some reports saying he was either smothered to death, poisoned, starved, or just left to waste away. Upon hearing of his demise mobs in Rome took to the street shouting "To the Tiber with Tiberius!", refering to criminals usually being thrown in the Tiber River rather then buried. Ultimately, his body was cremated and placed in the Mausoleum of Augustus. #history #rome image

Daily Roman History: Perhaps the greatest bro of all time was Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa. Meeting Augustus in youth, they became close friends. He went on to become Augustus' general and win every major battle he was involved in for Augustus including the victory at the Battle of Actium, which essentially won the Empire for Augustus. He was also a great architect designing the Pantheon in Rome which is still lauded to this day, as well as an accomplished writer. Perhaps the most noteworthy fact was the unwavering loyalty and allegiance to Augustus for over three decades. He was even raised to a status equal to that of Augustus with tribunate powers, and governorship of the eastern provinces. After falling deathly ill in 23BC Augustus named Agrippa as heir to the throne The choice was futhur secured by marrying Agrippa to Augustus' daughter Julia the Elder bringing him even more into the Imperial fold. Unfortunately Agrippa would die in 12BC at the age of 50, well before he would need to don the purple. Augustus is said to have spent over a month mourning the loss of his dear friend. #history #roman image

GOOD MORNING ☀️ #NOSTR Bird of the day: Fish crow Fish Crows are inveterate nest-robbers, raiding the nests of many kinds of waterbirds and songbirds, as well as finding and digging up the eggs of turtles. They also harass and steal food from crows, gulls, ibis, and Ospreys. Members of a mated pair frequently preen the back of each other's head. #birdstr #GM image

Daily Roman History: In his youth Julius Caesar was taken prisoner by pirates while traveling around Greece. Far from being concerned for his current situation, Caesar treated it like any other vacation, composing songs about his captors, hosting poetry nights, and generally getting along quite well with them. When he heard they were requesting 20 gold talents for his ransom he was insulted and demanded they ask for at least 50. All the while he would say that when he was free he'd come back and kill them all, which the pirates naturally thought was a joke. But after being freed that is just what Caesar did, killing or selling his ex-captors into slavery. #history #rome image

GOOD MORNING ☀️ #NOSTR Bird of the day: Ruby-throated hummingbird Ruby-throated hummingbirds are solitary. Adults of this species are not social, other than during courtship (which lasts a few minutes); the female also cares for her offspring. Both males and females of any age are aggressive toward other hummingbirds. They may defend territories, such as a feeding territory, attacking and chasing other hummingbirds that enter. #birdstr #GM image
