Daily Roman History: An early shock to the Roman system occured after the Battle of Allia in 387BC. Against a Gallic army lead by Brennus the Romans, surprisingly, were utterly routed. As shocked as the Romans were to this outcome the Gauls held back for a time before it was clear Roman had no surprises in store. Arriving at Rome the Gauls encamped overnight, again afraid of a trap, however this proved unnecessary as the Roman army remnants had fled to the recently conquered city of Veii, rather then the Capital leaving the city defenseless. Thus, the sack of Rome began. For days street fighting, looting and fires raged. Eventually the citizens sheltering in the citadel on the Capitalline Hill offered a ransom to end the seige. Agreeing to this request Brennus put the amount at 1000lbs of gold, with the Gauls providing the scale for measuments. When the Romans brought up the fact the scales appeared to be rigged in the Gallic favor Brennus threw his sword on the counterbalance and said "Vae victis" or "Woe to the vanquished", increasing the total owed. This event shook Rome to its core, and the boogeyman of Gaul would remain until Caesars conquest hundreds of years later. #history #rome

In the Byzantine capital of Constantinople sports were taken VERY seriously. So much so that the supporters of the teams of chariot racers, called demes, were organized enough to project actual political influence within the city. They would yell their position on current issue, from theological reform, to imperial succession, between the races, and the city guard had to co-opt the street gangs from each to help keep the peace. In 531/532CE a number of prominent members from the two biggest factions, the greens and the blues, were arrested related to recent murders. Most were executed, but two managed to escape and claim sanctuary in a nearby church. Wanting to de-escalate the Emperor Justinian I reduced the sentence to imprisonment, but the supporters wanted them freed. When that was refused the Nika riots began. The blues and greens joined into a faction called 'Nika', meaning victory, and even proclaimed their own Emperor, Hypatius. These riots lasted for around one week, and in it 30000 citizens were killed and over half the city burned. They were eventually ended when the blue side was able to be bribed and convinced to leave, with the Imperial army coming in and wiping out the remaining rebels. #history #rome
