The AfD fell three seats short of this absolute majority. Also Germany’s mainstream parties have a strict rule called the Brandmauer (political firewall)—a pledge never to form a coalition or help the AfD take power. Because the AfD needs a partner to govern, the other parties could technically lock them out by forming a messy alliance of their own, or force a complete deadlock.
