This Maya hub, active from roughly 1000 BC to 1200 AD, was far from a sleepy village; it was a sophisticated player in Mesoamerican trade networks, boasting Olmec influences and precious jade and gold artifacts. The undisputed star is a colossal 24-meter pyramid built in an ambitious 13 distinct phases. The complex also features a ritual ball court and intricate drainage systems. Jade artifacts, such as beads and pendants, have been found at Tazumal, highlighting the use of precious greenstone in elite ritual practices.
