⚡️🧮 NEW - Vitalik has just mathematically proven that Bitcoin has done something that no one has ever done in the history of humanity.
And the implications are crazy ⤵︎
The Bitcoin network has collectively performed 79 OCTILLION calculations since 2009.
To visualize:
• Grains of sand on Earth: ~10^18
• Atoms in your body: ~10^28
• Bitcoin calculations: ~10^28
Bitcoin = atomic scale in calculations. WTF.
Let's rephrase that:
If every human on Earth (8 billion) made 1 BILLION attempts per second... It would still take 315 MILLION YEARS to achieve what Bitcoin has done in 16 years. Let that sink in…
Why is no one talking about it?
Because it happened slowly, over 16 years, with millions of machines. But collectively, humanity has just crossed a threshold of computing power that was theoretical 20 years ago.
Proof of work works. Really. (It's kind of my driving force on Nostr.)
Cryptoskeptics say, "Bitcoin mining wastes energy for nothing."
But that "nothing" has literally just created the greatest demonstration of computational power in history.
It's not waste. It's proof.
Now, the real subject of Vitalik's thread: This power is so enormous that it is beginning to challenge our assumptions about what is "impossible" in cryptography.
If we can do 2^96 in 16 years... what will happen in another 16 years?
Cryptography is based on a gamble: "Some calculations take too long to perform, even with all the computers in the world."
Bitcoin just said, "Hold my beer, here's 2^96." Cryptographers look at this and think, "Okay, we need more margin."
Vitalik and other experts suggest: let's move from 96 bits to 128 bits of security. Why? Because 128 bits = 4 BILLION TIMES more calculations than 96 bits. That's not 30% more. It's FOUR BILLION TIMES more. That's exponential power.
Bitcoin has just proven that:
➥ Proof of work is the most powerful security system ever created.
➥ Humanity can achieve "impossible" things when it works together.
➥ But this power forces us to rethink what is "secure."
