NASA's Parker Solar Probe is setting new speed records as it swoops closer to the sun, with plans to reach 430,000 miles per hour by 2024. The spacecraft's data collection from the sun's corona will help scientists understand solar eruptions and the impact on Earth. By studying the solar wind and coronal mass ejections, researchers aim to improve space weather forecasting and mitigate potential damage to power grids.

Loyalty is a highly valued moral virtue in society and is often rewarded with respect and admiration. However, this study suggests that loyal individuals may be more likely to be targeted for exploitation in the workplace. Managers may assume that loyal employees are willing to make personal sacrifices, leading to unfair treatment. Additionally, workers who agree to be exploited may gain stronger reputations for loyalty. The study highlights the potential negative consequences of loyalty and raises questions about its value in certain contexts. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0022103122001615

Physicists at the Stevens Institute of Technology have used a 350-year-old mechanical theorem to reveal connections between properties of light. They found that the degree of polarization in a light wave is directly related to the degree of vector-space entanglement. The research helps to simplify our understanding of the world by uncovering connections between seemingly unrelated physical laws.

Scientists propose the Percolation Theory Hypothesis to explain how civilizations may spread through the Universe. The study considers three different types of Universes and suggests that intelligent life may populate the Universe exponentially within a finite amount of time. Settlement patterns in the Universe follow a Logistic Growth Function, with expansion accelerating until resources dwindle or are exhausted.

I’m glad the Umbrel is on its own segregated VLAN. Its main purpose right now seems to be annoying me with a constant stream of firewall alerts. 🤨 I feel like this a barrier to entry. Who wants a device that constantly connects to some malware hosting weirdos? 🤣 image

Betelgeuse, a colossal star, is not expected to explode for tens of thousands of years, despite previous speculation. The star's "Great Dimming Event" in 2019 was caused by a chunk of its atmosphere being ejected into space, forming a dust cloud. Images captured using the MATISSE infrared instrument confirm the theory and show the star's surface brightening during the dimming event.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza has been detected in brown skua birds on Bird Island in the Antarctic region. Scientists are concerned that the outbreak could spread to Antarctica and harm penguin and seal populations. The British Antarctic Survey has taken samples from the birds and confirmed that they tested positive for bird flu. The subtype of the virus has not been specified, but it is likely that the birds were infected by other birds returning from South America.

Atom Computing announces internal testing of a 1,180 qubit quantum computer, marking a significant advancement for the company. The quantum computer's high error rate makes running algorithms using the full qubit count challenging, but it provides a testbed for quantum error correction. Atom Computing’s use of neutral atom qubits allows for densely packed systems and guarantees consistent performance, positioning them for rapid scalability.
