How I deal with trolls.

I miss when movies and TV trusted silence. Not every scene needed a swelling soundtrack telling you what to feel. Footsteps. A door closing. Rain, a distant train, the tension between two people. The Foley artists and the room tone were enough. I love music—which is exactly why I notice when a filmmaker chooses not to use it. But the problem isn't the music. It's that people stopped giving anything their full attention, so everything got louder to compensate. Writers talk about "second-screen notes"—make it easier to follow for the viewer who's on their phone. Explain what was already shown. Say it twice. Watch the great films and shows of the '50s through the '90s. They weren't afraid to let a scene breathe. It has been said: "Music is the space between the notes." Sometimes silence isn't empty.
