🧠 JEE / IAT Chemistry Challenge: Don't Get Fooled by Rings!
I am currently studying Optical Isomerism for my upcoming 12th Board and JEE/IAT exams. Cyclic compounds are a favorite trap for paper setters when counting Chiral Centres.
Check out this structure:
A cyclohexane ring with:
- Methyl (-CH3) at C1
- Chlorine (-Cl) at C3
- Methyl (-CH3) at C6
At first glance, it's easy to guess 4 or miscount the symmetric pathways. But the real answer is 3 Chiral Centres!
Why? Because for C1, C3, and C6, moving clockwise vs. counter-clockwise around the ring yields entirely different sequences of atoms, satisfying the "4 different groups" rule for sp3 carbons. C4 is just a CH2 bridge.
