When did you first realize that social media and the big brand tech companies were out to monetize you as their product? For me it was probably only really the last 3 - 5 years. I never really thought of the motivations of a company to let you use a product for free. I didn't realize I was the product and my data was their incentive. #surveillancecapitalism #privacy
Privacy is a constantly evolving journey. Start by looking through your inbox and unsubscribing from that marketing list you don't read anymore. Delete (not deactivate) the old accounts. It's not a bad start. Reduce the risk of you being breached. Every little bit helps.
If you're privacy minded you might appreciate ProtonMail. Right now Proton Mail has big discounts on their subscription services for Black Friday. Encrypted drives, unlimited email alias addresses (on some plans), proton authenticator and password keeper to name a few. Integrate your Gmail, Outlook and other privacy invasive services with ease (and phase them out) I'm not affiliated but i know value when i see it. Pay in BTC if you need to. #Privacy #ProtonMail
I worry about the elderly and those that are less tech savvy. Sadly they all yoo often fall prey to online scams and other threats looking to take their hard earned cash off them . As painful as it can be, take the time out to help them verify email addresses and not respond to cold calls asking for credit card details or other PII. Hopefully someone pays it forward to you in your senior years! Be a good cyber citizen!
Do you think there's a market for individuals and small businesses paying for consulting around online privacy, implementing VPNs, password keeps and dark net monitoring, education around data privacy / data breach awareness etc? #asknostr
I'm developing a nice bot army of followers. Feels like I'm calling into the void.
If you haven't yet had a look check out www.ransomware.live for an interesting insight into ransomware across the globe and trends. #ransomware
Having social media is comparable to driving down the street with an anonymous person in the backseat quietly taking notes on where you are going, who you are talking to and writing down all your stop offs. They're not hurting you just noting your actions. They follow you everywhere. When you pay attention to them and ask what they are doing they remain mute and don't tell you what exactly they are saying to their other anonymous friends. Kinda creepy really. #socialmedia #onlineprivacy #privacy
I'm more than a little concerned about how readily people will film and take photos in public and upload it online without a consideration for anyone's privacy. Sporting clubs and education facilities are big offenders for this grabbing candid photos of young people for their social media without casting a thought to the wishes of the young person or that of their family. If you opt out you're made to feel like you're being difficult or unreasonable. Not everything has to be immortalized online. #privacy
AI can be fun but some videos should come with a warning. I've seriously had to tell a couple of older folk this week that the videos they had forwarded me weren't dogs on roller skates and that they were infact watching AI. They still didn't believe me.
It's a fine line the privacy conscious individual. On one hand you want to post and contribute on the other hand you want to be completely off the radar and not have your data trawled. I through think Nostr is a happy medium for me.
