01 // OCR-Bitcoin OCR-Bitcoin is based on the OCR-B typeface. It adds Bitcoin symbols and is designed for displaying currency amounts and numeric values with clarity. 02 // History & Cultural Recognition Fonts have aesthetics, and when used for specific purposes their functional design gains cultural meaning. OCR fonts became tied to balances, serial numbers, values, and money. By the late 1960s, machines were processing financial documents at scale. OCR-A was introduced in 1966 for machine reading. It worked but was clunky to read. OCR-B followed in 1968, refined for precision and designed to be clear for both machines and humans. Computer History: IBM OCR World 1966 | 03 // Functional Display OCR-Bitcoin’s first real-world use is in the Bitcoin Knots logo. It is also integrated into the node client for wallet addresses, currency amounts, and other readouts. The mock-ups below show how OCR-Bitcoin works as a display font for balances, fees, and transaction data across Bitcoin applications. 04 // Download OCR-Bitcoin is open source under the MIT license. 01 // Bitcoin🧵 This is one of the most successful logos in human history. Designed by "bitboy" from Bitcointalk on November 01, 2010 image /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 02 // What Is a Brand? What Is a Logo? A brand is what people say about you when you leave the room. It’s not your logo — it’s your reputation. A logo is a compressed signal of brand/reputation. One glance unpacks the values, vision, and promise. It’s like a visual hash. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Bitcoins Brand Here are some that are popular: • Fix the Money, Fix the World • Don't trust, verify • Fuck You Money • Not Your Keys, not Your Coins • ∞/21M • Run a Node • Have fun staying poor • Peaceful Revolution • Stack Sats • Bitcoin Doesn’t Care • There Is No Second Best • Bitcoin Only Bitcoin’s brand isn’t friendly or trusting — it’s a "currency of distrust" aka... honest money. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 04 // Proposed Icon + Wordmark for Knots “The secret of leadership is simple: Do what you believe in. Paint a picture of the future. Go there. People will follow.” — SG Yes, it’s just a font and a slash. Very Paul Allen’s business card — I know :) Heres logic how it helps signal Bitcoin is money. image /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 05 // Font Choice It's a nod to money. OCR-A was built in 1966 to do one thing, make money machine-readable. • Clean enough for humans • Precise enough for machines • Standardized by ANSI and ISO • Used across banking, checks, and ATMs Plus, it just has that cypherpunk aesthetic. image /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 06 // Why the Slash? The slash ( / ) is a nod to directory structure used in C++ — the programming language behind Bitcoin. It represents a path inside the system, a full-node software implementation that’s purely monetary. Knots is Bitcoin. And Bitcoin is only money. image
