The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. (Acts 17:30) Advent starts soon. Christmas is coming. St. Paul told the Athenians that now, after the first Advent of Christ, there was no more excuse for groping-about in ignorance. Now, God has appointed Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. The Christmas season is a wonderful time for you to repent of your rebellion against a Holy God and receive his mercy.

Luke 15:13 “Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.” The experience of the wasteful son shows clearly that people who have wasted all that God has given them are welcome to return to him and to be accepted fully as his children.

Genesis 11:2–4 And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” Human hubris: “human determination to meet human needs, self-confident wisdom to solve every problem without need of God.”

And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, Thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: For the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; He also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation. And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, Declare his doings among the people, Make mention that his name is exalted. Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: This is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: For great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee. (Isaiah 12:1–6)

“Why do not we love God as we should? It is because we have never realized what He has done for us in Christ, and this itself is because we have not realized the nature and the problem of sin.” Martyn Lloyd Jones
