πŸͺ¦ Bitcoin Obituary On July 21, 2016, in light of the completed #Ethereum hard fork, Vice published an article "Why Ethereum Succeeded Where Bitcoin Failed". The main argument was the author's admiration for how quickly Vitalik managed to unite the community and pull off a hard fork to roll back The #DAO developers' error and return the money lost by the Ethereum Foundation's leadership. Ethereum's success was contrasted with #Bitcoin's protracted "block size war," where the community split into two camps and was unable to reach a consensus for over a year. The moral of the story is actually different: decision-making and execution in centralized systems are much simpler and faster than in decentralized ones. image

πŸ”Œ The DAO Hard Fork On July 20, 2016, a hard fork occurred on the #Ethereum network, rolling it back to fix an error made by developers in The DAO smart contract. This error resulted in the hack of the contract and the theft of ~$150 million from major investors, including funds from Ethereum's leadership team, like Gavin Wood. The situation was quickly saved thanks to Ethereum's charismatic leader, Vitalik Buterin, who convinced the majority that investors' money should be returned by rolling back the "decentralized" network to the point before the hack. The decentralization they deserved. image

"When I designed Bitcoin, I designed it in such a way as to make future modifications to the consensus rules difficult without near unanimous agreement.
