The Major is a character who works as a kind of alter ego for Moebius: a traveler, explorer, and adventurer who exists in a science fiction universe completely free from conventional rules. The main character is Major Grubert, a space commander who lives in the Airtight Garage of Lewis Carnelian, a labyrinth-like world where dimensions, planets, and realities constantly overlap.
The story does not follow a traditional narrative structure. Moebius developed it with complete creative freedom, even improvising many parts of the story while drawing it. The result is a mix of psychedelic science fiction, absurd humor, philosophy, space adventures and criticism of traditional storytelling structures.
The Major is not a typical hero: he is a melancholic character, lost in an impossible universe, often appearing as if he does not fully understand the world he inhabits. That sense of mystery is one of Moebius’ defining traits: creating vast worlds while suggesting that we are only seeing a small fragment of them.
