9 years ago today, #Bitcoin took a major step toward becoming more resilient.
In 2017,
@Blockstream Satellite began broadcasting #Bitcoin blockchain data via satellite, meaning a node could receive new blocks from the network from space without an internet connection.
There is, of course, one major limitation: the connection is one-way. The satellite will deliver #Bitcoin data to you, but you still need an internet connection to send your own transactions.
Researchers and developers are working on solutions that will both get you the network data and send transactions directly to the satellite.
If these paths mature, #Bitcoin’s resilience will take another step forward, and an internet outage will no longer necessarily be a barrier to using the network.
