Building DMs for Satlantis at the moment…
Got a question.
NIP-04 or NIP-17 ??
I understood the former is being replaced by the latter..but…doesn’t look that’s the case (yet).
Seems @Amethyst / @Vitor Pamplona and @0xchat are the only main clients using NIP-17.
And @primal & @Damus are on NIP-04.
Have I got that right @miljan / @jb55 ? Or did I confuse something?
And if so, does it make sense to build the initial version on the old spec or better to go straight for the new spec?
Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Sharing this directly on Nostr. Let's hope it works this time.
This essay builds on the last one I wrote (As Nostr as Possible), but focuses specifically on some ‘sacred cows’ in the space whose time for slaying may have arrived.
It's not shitting on Nostr (far from it). It's about a different perspective and relationship to the protocol.
I hope this kicks off a few discussions.

You’ll see very quickly that I’m not shitting on Nostr (far from it).

Nostr Unpopular Opinions
Slaying some sacred cows
Think I’m going to turn this account into a building in public account.
I’ve never really been good at sharing things as I go, because I’m more of an introvert and generally like to work through things in private or with a small group of people.
Sure I can get on stage and give a talk or shill what I’m doing on a pod or network at an event - but that’s all very draining for me.
I’m also overly critical of my own work (whether that’s mine directly or the product of the team I’m working with). I’m a perfectionist at heart, so don’t like to share early.
That all being said - we’ve learned sooooo much in the last year, especially in the last 5/6 months.
We’ll be rolling a first actual public beta of @Satlantis: Social Events out in April. It’s the first time I’ve had enough confidence to do so with this product.
We are really trying to do something different. I don’t just want want to build a Twitter or Instagram clown with Zaps on Nostr. I want to create a whole new CATEGORY of product
It’s been a journey.
New approach to building with Nostr. A little more practical, based on learnings we’ve had in recent times.
On Substack for now. Tried publishing on highlighter but not working. Will try again later.

Came across this a few weeks ago.
Really made me think.
The way I read it is:
"What matters are the fruits borne of the political model or system of governance, not its name"
In other words, measure by results not by ideology.
This is of course easier said than done, because most results take decades or even centuries to realise.
But still.. Something to be learned here by all of us. There are some things which work in some places, but not in others. People and cultures vary.
Liberatarian-like principles might work in New Hampshire for example, but they likely will not work in Senegal or Borneo.
Food for thought..

Fucking legend.
Historic day.

Freedom or Autonomy.
Which way?
In my personal journey away from freedom maximalism, I came to realize that freedom is not the right thing to prioritize or aspire to.
Like happiness, it’s a state we all value, but it’s not a purposeful end in itself. Freedom, much like happiness, is a byproduct—you don’t achieve it by chasing it directly. And just as happiness is more meaningful when earned, so too is freedom (and idea that likely already resonate with many of you).
What you may not have considered, however, is that freedom, like happiness, is a value not a vitrue. Values differ from virtues in that the former are passive while the latter are active.
The former are things you experience when you act in accordance with the latter. You experience happiness through making progress, just as you experience freedom through making choices (whether that choice is to take ownership and responsibility, or to let go and surrender).
This understanding led me to a deeper realization: freedom itself is almost a passive state, while agency and responsibility are active forces. You may value freedom, but attaining it requires deliberate action—action that demands responsibility and ownership.
This is where autonomy comes into the picture. Autonomy is conceptually a blend of freedom and responsibility. It is the ability (and freedom) to choose, combined with the courage (and responsibility) to own the consequences of those choices.

Another one!
Sabrina runs the first and only massage studio in #ElZonte
She’s lived here all her life, learned to speak fluent English and has set up a massage studio with a 5 star rating on Google.
She’s now on @Satlantis: Social Events which means you can follow her, get her location details, and very soon, DM her.
No more need for WhatsApp, Instagram or Google Maps.
She can run her business in one place, and build an audience, and get new clients.
So show her some love - send her a follow and a message & welcome her to #nostr

So this was the place we just onboarded.
A Bitcoin hotel near #ElZonte which just opened up recently.
They had no idea what Nostr was but they have IG, X, and Google maps.
We pulled their location data from Google, and created a “location” on @Satlantis: Social Events - which is a “location event type” on Nostr.
We then sat with the merchant to “claim” their location.
This claiming process creates a Nostr profile and then assumes the location as part of it (we swap a new location event in signed by their nsec).
Now they are on Nostr, they own their profile, which includes owning all the location data - which they’re now able to edit.
This means they now have a full merchant page with an audience, a profile, the ability to post, their location info, opening hours and so much more.
A new era begins!!

Holy shit!!
We set up the first merchant profile on @Satlantis: Social Events who was able to claim it all through a Google Maps integration which proved their ownership of the actual location!
This is going to CHANGE the game for merchant onboarding, not only for Nostr, but long term for Bitcoin adoption!
